Postnatal doulas provide practical and emotional support to a family, usually in the first few weeks and months after the birth. The invaluable support that a postnatal doula can bring is really tailored to what the family needs to help enable them to parent the way they feel is best. Help with older siblings, cooking, putting a wash on, walking the dog or helping with the school run can take the pressure off when you’re trying to bond with a new baby and establish feeding as well as allowing a new mum the time to recover, heal and become a mother! An absolute must as far as we are concerned!
Times have changed and we no longer have extended family and close community to step in and help with a new baby, bringing their years of wisdom along with them. Coupled with that there is very little in the way of postnatal care and support as standard and it can feel like a luxury to have any help at all. A postnatal doula can offer this practical and emotional support in the early weeks which really can give you the breathing space you need to get to grips with being a new mother to a new little person.
